On my way to Our Nation's Capitol

The Cincinnati Union Terminal is pretty nice.  The main terminal’s roof is like ten stories high and it’s painted this bright orange and yellow. I’m guessing those are the original art deco colors from the 1930’s.  Two large murals and a bunch of art deco architectural features. You can read more about the history of Union Terminal on Wikipedia.

It turns out the actual room inside Union Terminal that is now the Amtrak train station doesn’t open until 11PM.  Luckily the people working the ticket booth at the main entrance are very nice and said that I can wait inside the main part of the building. After my brother drops me off, I’m sitting out soaking up the architecture in the main entrance hall and this guy comes over with a badge. After some inspection of the badge I determine he’s a security guard. He asks me if I’m waiting for a train, and if so could I please move into the vending machine area so they can clean the floors. He was friendly, and told me there were lockers back a ways if I wanted to put my bags in there so I could go see the Imax movie at 7PM. I'm now travelling with a huge backpack and I'm not used to it yet. I have to set my backpack on one of the tables so that it's high barely high enough with me being my knees to be able to get my arms through the loops and eventually I get it on my back straight enough that it won't fall off.

The Imax sounds like a good way to kill an hour, so I head to the locker area. I try to stuff my backpack into the locker, but the pack was a tiny bit too wide to fit. The backpack is bulging because it’s stuffed so full a strong push won't squeeze it into the locker.  I give up and try to figure out how I'm going to get the pack on my back. There are n o tables in this area. I push the backpack up against the wall, get one shoulder in, hoist it up high on my back, and then got the other arm through.  This is all great practice and and providing important information on how to get my backpack on when there aren’t any ledges or tables around.  Because tables are so low, it’s actually easier to hold the backpack against the wall to put it on.  I’m not sure which wasy is more entertaining for passers-by.

Now I have this little vending area to myself. Turns out it’s a perfect setup to wait. I have a shelf where I can put my suitcase that’s full of snacks and water.  Then there’s a power strip with 7 electrical outlets so I'm able to plug in my laptop.  What a surprise to see that Cincinnati has free internet. Now I'm able to update my blog with what's happening.

You guessed it. Nothing is happening here. It’s pretty quiet except for some maintenance guys that come past every now and then and the people out moving the tables and chairs to prep cleaning the floor I guess. I probably won't have a chance to post an update to my blog until after the weekend.
